Vintage Original Photograph of Metropolitan Ireney – Russian Orthodox – Nicholas Petroff Archive
Original vintage black-and-white photograph depicting Metropolitan Ireney at a formal Russian Orthodox or Russian émigré community occasion in New York.
Metropolitan Ireney is shown standing with an unidentified woman (Vera Petroff?) wearing a floral corsage and an unidentified gentleman. The specific event and the identities of the other two individuals have not been established.
The photograph is an original period photographic print, not a modern reproduction.
The reverse bears the original photographer/studio ink stamp:
M. Tehanukow
Photo Studios of New York
561 W. 181st St., Room 24
LO 8-5576
A handwritten studio/archive notation is also present on the reverse.
Based on the photograph, studio information and associated archive material, this photograph appears to date approximately to the 1950s–early 1960s. Exact date and event are currently unknown.
Nicholas Petroff Archive Provenance
This original photograph was retrieved from the Nicholas Petroff archive, a collection containing Russian émigré family photographs, Russian Orthodox religious material, correspondence, ephemera and other historical items.
The larger Petroff archive includes material associated with the Russian Orthodox émigré community and Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York.
This photograph was produced by M. Tehanukow Photo Studios of New York, as documented by the original studio stamp on the reverse.
No claim is being made that this particular photograph was taken at Holy Trinity Monastery. The studio information instead supports a New York City connection.
Identification
The central Orthodox clergyman is identified as Metropolitan Ireney.
The woman and gentleman accompanying him remain unidentified. Although this photograph originates from the Petroff archive, I would not identify the woman as Vera Petroff without additional documentary evidence.
Will ship safely as always.
