Vintage 10-Piece Russian Orthodox / Religious Photograph & Postcard Collection — Nicholas Petroff Archive
Offered is a fascinating 10-piece collection of vintage photographs, snapshots, postcards and religious images, acquired as part of the Nicholas Petroff archive.
The group has a strong Russian Orthodox / Eastern Orthodox component and includes several photographs depicting Orthodox clergy, church interiors, religious ceremonies and related subjects, along with vintage art postcards and other period photographs.
The clergy photographs include (among others):
- Archbishop Averky Taushev:(secular name Alexander Pavlovich Taushev), a highly prominent bishop, theologian, and spiritual writer of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).
- St. John Maximovitch (St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco1896–1966):iconic portrait, a highly revered bishop and wonderworker of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR).
- Metropolitan Ireney (Bekish) (1892–1981)standing beside a woman (who may be Vera Petroff) at a gathering or reception. Metropolitan Ireney served as Primate from 1965 until his retirement in 1977 and became the first Primate of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in America following the granting of autocephaly in 1970.
- Archbishop Anthony (Medvedev): I believe this is him.Awidely revered hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR). He succeeded St. John Maximovitch as the ruling archbishop of San Francisco and the Western American Diocese, serving faithfully in that role from 1968 until his repose in 2000.
The reverse of one photograph contains a handwritten notation which translates:The Russian handwritten text on the back of the photograph translates to: \"For Irina. Novice Irina. August 1963.\" (or literally \"Д-о Ирина. Послушница Ирина. Август 1963 г.\", where послушница refers to a female novice/trainee in an Orthodox Christian monastery).
Several photographs also have vintage commercial photo-processing markings on the backs.
Nicholas Petroff Archive Provenance
These pieces were recovered together as part of the Nicholas Petroff archive, an extensive group of personal, family, Russian émigré and Russian Orthodox material. They are being kept together as found rather than separated, preserving their archival association.
The Petroff archive contains substantial material connected with the Russian émigré community and Orthodox religious life. No identification of individual clergy in this particular lot is guaranteed unless specifically visible or documented on the photographs themselves.
This is an interesting group for collectors of Russian Orthodox Church history, ROCOR, Russian émigré history, vintage religious photography, Orthodox clergy photographs, ecclesiastical ephemera and historical photo archives.
Will ship safely as always.
