Lot of 3 Vintage Orthodox Clergy Photographs – St. John Maximovitch & Metropolitan Ireney – Nicholas Petroff Archive
Exceptional group of three vintage Orthodox photographs from the Nicholas Petroff Archive, including photographs associated with two important figures in 20th-century Orthodox Christianity:
Saint John Maximovitch (1896–1966)
The black-and-white portrait / print on photo paper depicts St. John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, one of the best-known Orthodox hierarchs of the 20th century. He served in Shanghai, Western Europe and San Francisco and reposed in Seattle on July 2, 1966. He was glorified/canonized in 1994. Orthodox Church in America
Metropolitan Ireney (Bekish) (1892–1981)
The color photograph depicts Metropolitan Ireney (Bekish), Metropolitan of All America and Canada, standing beside a woman (who may be Vera Petroff) at a gathering or reception. Metropolitan Ireney served as Primate from 1965 until his retirement in 1977 and became the first Primate of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in America following the granting of autocephaly in 1970. Orthodox Hierarch Funeral / Repose Photograph
The third color photograph shows a deceased Orthodox hierarch lying in repose in elaborate vestments, with cross and staff. I do not know who he is. I make no claim that this is Saint John's funeral merely because his portrait accompanies it. Contemporary Orthodox accounts confirm that St. John's body was vested in archpastoral garments following his repose in 1966, but that alone isn't enough to identify this photograph conclusively.
