Original circa 1890s large-format Pach Bros. New York photograph showing an extraordinary Gilded Age art, antiques and decorative arts gallery interior.
The photograph measures approximately 14.5 x 10.75 inches overall on its original photographer's board, with PACH BROS impressed at lower left and NEW YORK at lower right.
This is an unusually detailed interior view showing what appears to be a professionally arranged fine art exhibition, sale preview, antiques gallery or important collection rather than an ordinary residential interior. The large skylit room is densely filled with paintings, porcelain, ceramics, sculpture, clocks, glass, bronzes and other decorative objects.
The left wall is particularly impressive, with numerous framed paintings hung in the period salon style from floor level nearly to the ceiling. Throughout the room are large ornamental urns and vases, elaborate porcelain and ceramic pieces, sculpture, small decorative objects, display cabinets, tables and individual exhibition pedestals. At center is a particularly prominent large circular decorative object displayed by itself on a tall pedestal.
The photograph provides an exceptional visual record of the manner in which valuable art and decorative objects were exhibited in New York during the Gilded Age.
The photographer is also significant. Pach Brothers was one of the best-known New York photographic firms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm photographed prominent Americans as well as institutions, artworks, collections and important interiors. Pach Bros. photographs are represented today in major institutional collections including the New York Public Library, National Gallery of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Getty Museum and Smithsonian collections.
Research suggests a circa 1890s date for this photograph. Pach Bros. maintained its New York studio at 841 Broadway from 1883 to 1890 and at 935 Broadway beginning in 1891.
Further research into the unidentified interior produced an intriguing possible connection with the American Art Association / American Art Galleries, one of New York's most important Gilded Age art sale and exhibition establishments. The type of installation seen here — paintings combined with porcelain, ceramics, sculpture and other decorative arts arranged throughout a formal gallery — is consistent with the elaborate collection exhibitions and sale previews for which the American Art Galleries became famous.
However, no captioned duplicate or other documentary evidence has yet been located conclusively identifying this particular room. For that reason, American Art Galleries is presented only as a research possibility and not as a confirmed identification.
Regardless of the exact gallery, this is a remarkable original period photograph documenting the late-19th-century New York art and antiques world. The unusually large format allows considerable detail to be seen in the individual paintings, porcelain, furniture and other objects, and further research may eventually make it possible to identify the exhibition or collection pictured.
Original photograph and mount show age-related wear including scattered spotting/foxing and surface soiling, tonal fading, edge wear, corner wear and losses/chipping to portions of the mount, particularly at the corners. Reverse is blank with general age and storage wear. Please examine photographs closely for condition.
A substantial and highly displayable original Pach Bros. photograph with excellent subject matter for collectors of New York City history, Gilded Age interiors, art galleries, sale houses, antique dealers, porcelain and ceramics, Asian decorative arts, fine art, museum history and early photography.
