Up for sale is a highly detailed, authentic Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) from the World War I mobilization era. The front features a sharp, clear image of an American soldier training detachment posing inside an excavated trench with manual tools, including pickaxes and shovels.
Historical Background:
This image captures field maneuvers at Camp Fremont, California (located across modern-day Menlo Park and Palo Alto). Active briefly between 1917 and 1919, the camp specialized in prepping troops—notably the 8th Division—for tactical realities on the Western Front. This card documents the crucial training infrastructure built in the Bay Area to simulate European trench lines.
Reverse Markings & Provenance Notes:
• Camp Location: Faint period pencil notation identifies the location as "Camp Fremont, CAL."
• Production/Studio Footprint: Features a fascinating vertical pencil notation along the left margin reading "A.J.B. 47 Kearny St." — tracing back to the historic Rossiter Building in San Francisco’s Financial District, which housed photo-finishing printers and engravers servicing the wartime military influx.
• Dating: The AZO stamp box on the reverse features two triangles pointing up and two pointing down, strictly anchoring the photographic paper production window between 1918 and 1930.
Condition Report:
The postcard is in Very Good / Vintage condition for a 100+ year-old piece of military ephemera. The photographic side features exceptional contrast, clean lines, and crisp detail with minimal surface wear. The reverse side remains unposted and features period pencil inventory or production notations with light silvering/smudging consistent with age. Please inspect the high-resolution scans for precise edge and surface details.
