Rare WWI Knockaloe Internment Camp Commemorative Medal – Isle of Man – 1914-1915 – Numbered 8369 – With Wooden Box
Offered is a scarce World War I commemorative medal associated with the Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man.
The medal measures approximately 45.1 mm in diameter.
The obverse features a detailed view of the Knockaloe camp surrounded by barbed wire, with the distinctive three-legged Isle of Man triskelion above the scene.
The reverse reads:
WELTKRIEG 1914-1915
ERINNERUNG AN DIE KRIEGSZEIT
KNOCKALOE
ISLE OF MAN
The reverse is also individually stamped/numbered 8369.
The German wording “Erinnerung an die Kriegszeit” translates approximately to “Remembrance of the wartime.”
Knockaloe was a large civilian internment camp operated on the Isle of Man during World War I. The camp held thousands of internees, primarily German, Austrian and other civilians considered enemy aliens during the war.
This example comes with the fitted wooden box shown in the photographs, which adds considerably to its historical interest and display appeal.
