๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Civil War Centennial Cachet Envelope, DIXIPEX IV, Antique 1961 NOS

There was a stretch in the early 1960s when post offices, philatelic clubs and small-town postmasters all marked the Civil War Centennial together - temporary exhibition stations, custom cachet artwork, one-time-only cancellations. This cover came straight out of that moment, franked and hand-canceled and never mailed for correspondence, just kept as the keepsake it was made to be.

๐Ÿ“‹ SPECIFICATIONS
  • Printed: CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL / DIXIPEX IV COMMEMORATES / a seal-style medallion captioned JEFF. DAVIS ยท OUR FIRST PRESIDENT / 1861 - JUNE - 1961
  • Design: dark blue line-engraving-style cachet with red and orange accents, a seal-style medallion with a portrait of Jefferson Davis, two different 1861-era flag designs crossed above it, a scatter of stars, and a laurel-wreathed landscape vignette below
  • Stamp: a 4-cent green "CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL - FORT SUMTER" U.S. commemorative, showing a Union cannon and gunner
  • Postmark: a black circular Alabama exhibition-station cancel dated June 1, 1961 - the ones I have handled have come from Birmingham and from Selma, at different hours of the same day, since each cover was hand-canceled on the spot rather than machine-run
  • Size: 6 1/2" x 3 3/4"
  • Back: the flap adhesive shows through the paper the way genuine sixty-year-old envelope gum does - honest evidence this was never soaked or restored, not damage
๐Ÿ“ฆ CONDITION

New Old Stock. Never used for correspondence, offered exactly as pictured - since no two of these hand-canceled covers are quite identical, please look closely at the photos of the specific one you're buying.

๐Ÿ“– THE STORY

Why this centennial cover came out of Alabama. Montgomery, Alabama was where the 1861 Southern secession convention actually met and wrote its founding constitution, months before Richmond took over as the seat of government - and it was on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol that Jefferson Davis was sworn in as that government's first and only president, a moment whose legacy Alabama collectors were still marking a hundred years later. For philatelic clubs organizing the state's Civil War Centennial events in 1961, that wasn't distant history, it was their own state's founding chapter - exactly why a cachet built around "our first president" came out of an Alabama exhibition circuit rather than somewhere else.

"DIXIPEX" follows the same naming convention stamp clubs used nationwide for their shows - short for philatelic exhibition, the same pattern behind NAPEX or TEXPEX - and the "IV" marks this as the fourth time the show had run. Old-timers in Alabama philatelic circles still talk about DIXIPEX as one of the better regional shows of its day. A club would arrange a temporary exhibition station with the Post Office, cut a special hand-cancel die just for the day, and let visitors buy a printed cachet envelope and walk away with a postmark that would never be struck again anywhere else. That's the whole ritual sitting in this envelope.

Look closely at the two crossed flags on the cachet and you'll notice they're not the same design - one is styled after the first official national flag flown by the 1861 Southern states, the other after the battle standard carried by their army in the field. Whoever drew this cachet knew their subject well enough to put two different chapters of that flag history on the same envelope rather than reaching for one generic symbol.

  • Civil War Centennial and 1860s postal-history collectors
  • Alabama and Southern regional history collections
  • Gifts for a stamp-collecting relative or Civil War history buff
