Stinson Junior NC12176 Merrimac Chemical Monsanto Airplane Finishes Photo
The Company Plane That Advertised Its Own Paint JobDESCRIPTIONAn 8x10 photographic print of a 1931 Stinson Model S "Junior" cabin monoplane, registration NC-12176, parked on an airfield ramp with a ship and industrial skyline visible in the hazy distance. The fuselage carries a two line advertisement for Merrimac Chemical Co., Inc., a division of Monsanto Chemical Works, and a third line reading "Airplane Finishes," the aircraft dope and lacquer that coated and sealed fabric covered aircraft throughout the Golden Age of flight, meaning the very paint job on display here was very likely this company's own product.Merrimac began as the Woburn Chemical Works in Massachusetts before becoming the Merrimac Chemical Company and later the Merrimac Division of Monsanto, and keeping a company demonstrator plane in its own colors was a natural piece of promotion for a firm in the business of finishing airplanes. The reverse of the print carries a partial rubber archive stamp reading "MDC ST. LOUIS" alongside a postmark dated November 2, 1979, and a typed mailing label addressed to a Southern California collector, Donald B. Aitken of Irvine, tracing this print's paper trail through a major aerospace company's photo library and into private hands nearly half a century ago.Image scanned at 600dpi. Shipping is free and already built into the price, so the BIN price is exactly what you pay, no surprise shipping costs at checkout.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. If any listing is incorrect in any way and you're unsatisfied with the item, please connect with me and I'll make it right.Orders placed before Noon CDT ship same day via Ground Advantage with tracking. Returns accepted on all items exceeding $25 in cost. All shipments receive rigid, professional packaging, sealed and protected in acid free sleeves.CONDITIONThis is a glossy photographic print measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches, with the image filling nearly the full sheet to a thin white border. The print is clean and sharp with strong contrast between the dark fuselage and the pale overcast sky, and the fuselage advertising text and tail registration are fully legible.Surface and edges show only light handling wear consistent with age and storage, with no tears, creases, or heavy soiling apparent. The reverse carries the archive stamp, postmark, and mailing label described above, along with a second stamped line that is only partially legible. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description.
