Monsanto Merrimac Chemical Stinson Junior Airplane
NC12176 1930s Photo 8x10
Company-Lettered Stinson | 1979 MDC St. Louis PrintDESCRIPTIONThis 8x10 black and white photograph shows a Stinson Junior cabin monoplane parked on an airfield apron, shot low and close from beneath the wing. The rudder carries the registration NC-12176, which the civil aircraft register lists as a Stinson S Junior. The fuselage is lettered MERRIMAC CHEMICAL CO. INC. with the words Division of Monsanto Chemical Works beneath, and two dark stripes run the length of the cabin.Merrimac was a major name in American industry. The company grew out of the Woburn Chemical Works in Massachusetts and was described by TIME as the oldest and largest New England maker of heavy chemicals for the textile, paper and tanning industries. Monsanto of St. Louis bought it in 1929, which is why the airplane carries the Monsanto division line. This is a company-lettered airplane wearing the name of one of New England\'s oldest chemical firms under its new owner. The Stinson Junior was a fully cowled, strut-braced cabin monoplane with a 215 hp Lycoming R-680 radial, built for owners who wanted a real cabin airplane at a Depression-era price. The EAA Museum notes that the closely related SM-8A, priced at $5,775 in 1930, outsold all other cabin airplanes combined that year. No pilot, date or airfield caption appears on the print, so this listing sticks to what the photograph shows. The photograph is slightly soft in focus, as noted below, but the company lettering and registration remain readable. From the AITKEN COLLECTION. This is a 1979 company print from McDonnell Douglas Corporation, St. Louis, and is not an original period print. The reverse carries blue rubber stamps reading MDC ST. LOUIS, NOV 29 1979 and NEGATIVES NOT FILED, along with a typed label from collectors Donald and Barbara Aitken of Irvine, California. It is described and priced as a 1979 company print.Photos are 600dpi scans of the actual print, including close-ups of the tail, fuselage lettering, nose and reverse stamps.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. If any listing is incorrect in any way and you\'re unsatisfied with the item, please connect with me and I\'ll make it right.Orders placed before Noon CDT will ship same day Ground Advantage with tracking so you know exactly when it will arrive. Returns accepted on all items exceeding $25 in cost. Rigid, professional packaging on all shipments sealed and protected in acid free protectors. Shipping is free and already built into the price, so the BIN price is exactly what you pay, no surprise shipping costs at checkout.CONDITIONBlack and white 8x10 photographic print on cream-toned paper, a 1979 MDC St. Louis company print. The focus is slightly soft overall, including the fuselage lettering and the tail registration, which comes from the original exposure and not from wear, though the lettering and NC-12176 remain readable. Tones are good, with clean whites and a full range of grays. No creases, tears, stains or fold lines are visible in the scans. A few small dust specks and fine hairline surface marks show, mostly in the dark areas near the nose. There is no writing on the front. The reverse shows the blue MDC ST. LOUIS, NOV 29 1979 and NEGATIVES NOT FILED stamps and the typed Aitken Collection label. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description.
