An early (late 19thor early 20thCentury) two blade sleeve board pocket knife by Brooked & Crookes. Not 100% certain whether the scales are second cut stag (which I believe they are) or jigged bone. See photos. Brookes & Crookes trace their origins back to 1851 and won an Honor at the 1851 Festival of Britain. The first known mention of the two partners, John Brookes and Thomas Crookes, working together was around 1859 and they developed a reputation for fine quality cutlery. The company managed to stay in business until 1957. This knife has the “Made in England” mark required after the passing of the Merchandise Marks Act of 1887, dating this to the post-1887 period.
Measures approximately 3 5/16 inches long overall, closed. Master blade measures approximately 1 9/16 inches long ,edge only. Obverse tang stamped with “Brookes & Crookes” in an arch over “Sheffield” with the Bell Trademark. Reverse tang stamped “Made in England”. Secondary pen blade measures approximately 1 5/16 inches long, edge only. Obverse with identical tang stamp to the master, reverse stamped “Oil The Joints”. Good jigged bone or second cut stag scales secured by three pins. No bolsters. Brass liners.
Strong snap to both blades. Scales good with no chips or cracks. Some stains and light scratching to the blades and spring, otherwise bright.
