Restored Vintage Sears SilverTone AM Table Radio from 1962:
$349.00

If you are looking for a restored 1960's retro styled radio that can be played as often as you like and for as long as you like, please read on::

Most of the restored radios I offer for sale were originally manufactured between 1936 and 1952. In 1955, radio designs began to change dramatically. Wood or brown bakelite cabinets were replaced by colored polystyrene and the electronic chassis' inside started to incorporate printed circuit boards and utilize simple integrated circuits instead of individual capacitors & resistors. Also, the old technology wax capacitors found inside more vintage radio sets were replaced by capacitors composed of very durable ceramic materials. The 1962 Sears SilverTone radio for sale incorporates one integrated circuit and ceramic capacitors and resistors. There is another class of capacitor called an electrolytic. These electrolytics are the work horse of the radio as they change AC current from your home into DC current which radios need to work. The original electrolytic capacitor from 1962 has been replaced with a new unit ( round aluminum can on top ).

For those interested, old wax capacitors were made by rolling aluminum foil around wax paper (see photo). The waxes themselves were not as impervious to moisture pickup as thought and the resulting corrosive action on the aluminum foil sandwiched between led to failure. There were no fancy polymers way back then, only wax.

Today, there exist rolled aluminum capacitors as well as ceramics used by technicians restoring vintage radios. There is no wax involved. Modern rolled capacitors are made by utilizing huge rolls of poly-plastic ( like huge rolls of toilet paper ) which pass through an atmosphere of vaporized aluminum metal. The vaporized aluminum metal deposits itself onto the plastic in a continuous process with extremely uniform thickness. Capacitors are rolled from this plastic material with the bonded aluminum making an impervious package. By the way, this is the same way potato chip bags and Birthday balloons are made having that silver finish.

Having said all of that, this Sears Silvertone radio required very little replacement of component parts soldered to the printed circuit board. However, it did require a thorough going over reverse engineering in order to clean the cabinet and check component functions. The cabinet itself measures 13.5"x4"x6"high and has been treated with carnauba wax. The only dusting requirement would be a soft cloth. No cracks in the cabinet. Every effort has been made to offer a practically new radio, performing as it did originally, and to be maintenance free for quite some time. A thorough clean job. Check out all the photos.

The power cord has been updated with a polarized outlet plug. The square looking aluminum cans you see in the photos contain tuning coils. Using instrumentation, the coils were re-tuned after years of being idle. The end result is a distinctive retro tube radio giving excellent reception across the dial, playing with warmth and depth. This radio uses 6 tubes. All 6 tubes are "New Old Stock".

Of course, there are other retro radio sets you can buy, but none come close to the level of time, attention, and expertise paid to restoring this fine 1962 retro Sears SilverTone model.

Thoroughly bench tested, this vintage SilverTone radio set is ready for it's new home. So, if you're seeking both dependability as well as distinctive styling in a restored AM radio set, you've come to the right place.
