Vintage General Electric P-780B Eight Transistor Portable AM Radio – Restored & Fully Working
A wonderful survivor from the dawn of truly portable American transistor radio.
This handsome General Electric Eight Transistor radio dates to approximately 1960 and features the striking mid-century design GE used on its celebrated P-780 series: a rich rust/orange textured cabinet, gleaming chrome trim, large horizontal speaker grille, classic analog tuning scale, tone control, and leather carrying handle.
This radio has been restored and is fully functional. It has been tested with fresh batteries and performs very well. The radio powers on properly, receives stations, the tuning functions correctly, and the dial light works. Sound is strong and clear for a vintage transistor set.
One of the pleasures of this model is that it feels more substantial than the tiny pocket transistor radios that became common in the 1960s. The large cabinet and speaker give it a presence all its own, both visually and sonically. Turn the knob, watch the warm dial light come alive, and it instantly transports you back to an era when portable radio was exciting new technology.

The character is still very much intact. This is not a modern reproduction or a lifeless display piece. It is a genuine period radio that can still be switched on and enjoyed more than six decades after it was made.
A little history
General Electric was formed in 1892 from the combination of Thomas Edison’s Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Over the following decades, GE became one of the defining names in American electrical technology, producing everything from generating equipment and appliances to radios and other consumer electronics.
The P-780 family arrived at an especially interesting moment in radio history. Transistors were replacing vacuum tubes, allowing radios to operate instantly from batteries without the warm-up time, bulk, and power demands of earlier tube sets. The P-780B version is documented as an eight-transistor model produced from approximately late 1959/early 1960 through April 1961
