Description:Vintage advertising matchbook from The Brig at 1710 Aliceanna Street in Baltimore, Maryland, a gay bar in the Fells Point neighborhood documented in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s LGBT Collection. The Smithsonian dates surviving advertising material from The Brig to approximately 1978–1980. This striking matchbook features The Brig’s ball-and-chain logo on one side and a provocative leather/bondage-style male illustration on the other, making it an evocative survivor of Baltimore’s late-1970s gay nightlife and leather preowned condition with age toning, surface wear, minor staining, edge and corner wear, and marks consistent with age.
