Civil War Patriotic Cover Soldier’s Dream of Home Poolesville MD Oct 9 1861
Scarce Civil War patriotic cover featuring the elaborate all-over “THE SOLDIER\'S DREAM OF HOME” design.
A particularly striking Civil War-era envelope showing a Union soldier asleep in camp, with his rifle beside him, dreaming of his family at home. The detailed black illustration is accented in red and covers nearly the entire face of the envelope.
Addressed to Miss J. Hortense Blanchard, Leominster, Massachusetts, believed to be Josephine Hortense Blanchard (1840-1907) of Harvard and Clinton, Mass., later the wife of Dr. Geo. W. Symonds.
Franked with a 3¢ rose Washington stamp, tied by a POOLESVILLE, MD., OCT 9 circular date stamp. The usage appears to date from 1861, during the major Union military presence around Poolesville early in the Civil War.
This is an especially appealing combination of Civil War postal history, patriotic envelope design, military-area usage, and identifiable Massachusetts correspondence.
The cover remains quite presentable for its age, with the elaborate front design substantially complete. There is age toning and normal handling wear, with a couple of tears/damage and old hinge remnants on the reverse. Please examine the high-resolution scans carefully for exact condition.
From the collection of Dr. Allan C. “Doc” Johnson (1889-1941) of Clinton, Massachusetts, an active stamp collector during the early 20th century. Doc\'s collection has remained with his family for more than eight decades.
