TORTURED BRUTALISM!
BRUTALIST BRONZE
BALLERINA SCULPTURE!
AFTER ALBERTO GIACOMETTI
POLISHED GRANITE BASE
DIMENSIONS: Height: 16.5” Base: 3-1/4"
This beautiful bronze work is a marvelous example
of the sixties brutalist movement in fine art sculpture!
Tortured metal is stretched and worked with an eye towards perspective.
The figure's arms are extended; she dwindles as your eye travels
up her structurally visible legs to small breasts, hollowed head and chest.
How close you get to her, determines whether she retreats or advances,
The light caresses and touches her mottled, gnarled and molten surfaces,
casting shadows and sculpting space in and outside the figure.
Very much in tune with some of Giacometti's finest works,
this piece has this added element of 'negative space.'
The viewer is confronted with the absence of material
as bronze is worked and tortured to show only
a fraction of reality. The hollowed torso and limbs
demand the viewer increase their perception
of what is in this negative space.
We must take the sculpture further.
The finest artists of the mid century period
were not just sculpting form but contemplating
existential concepts.
The hollowed out elements which dominate this work
can be compared to the parts of the woman/ballerina
that need fulfillment.
Aspirations, dreams, accomplishments.
Truly a mid century Brutalist masterpiece.
Gorgeous vintage condition. Displays beautifully!
These go for $700+. Great deal.
