DETAILS:Originalphotogravurealbumen photograph issued on tissue paper of a Native American Indian by photographer E.F. Curtis. Circa 1908. Titled:Big Road's Twin Daughters ("Daughters of a Chief"). The twin sisters from the Oglala Lakotaare pictured on horseback in traditional Northern Plains dresses adorned with elk teeth, which indicated the status and wealth of their family.
The image was captured during Curtis's documentation of the Teton Sioux and published in Volume 3 of his monumental work, The North American Indian.Measures 12" x 10" inches.
BACKGROUND:This photograph is fromEdward S. Curtis 1908, The North American Indian which was published in 20 volumes between 1907-1930. The series was limited by Curtistoonly five hundred copies.Of the five hundred sets, only one hundred were issued with plates on tissue paper.
