Vintage 14” x 11” photographic portrait of a Nez Perce man, originally photographed by Edward H. Latham in 1906 on the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho.
The subject is shown wearing an elaborately decorated beaded vest, layered necklaces, silver armbands, traditional textiles, and holding a pipe with fur strips. The image is documented by the Museum of the Rockies Photo Archive as “Nez Perce Man, Nez Perce Reservation, Idaho,” photographed by Edward H. Latham in 1906, catalog no. x77.25.29. Their archival example is also described as a vintage 14 x 11 inch print.
This particular example has an old reverse label reading:
“EDWARD S. CURTIS / NEZ PERCE, IDAHO 1908.”
That attribution appears to be incorrect. Archival documentation identifies the photograph as the work of Edward H. Latham, not Edward S. Curtis. Similar Latham photographs are known to have been historically misattributed to Curtis, making the reverse label an interesting part of this print’s history and provenance.
The photograph appears to be an older fiber-based photographic print with a glossy, lightly textured surface. Based on the paper, surface texture, edges, and overall construction, it appears vintage, but the exact printing date of this particular print is unknown. The year 1906 refers to the date the original photograph was taken.
The print is mounted to board. The reverse retains the old Curtis attribution label and remnants of earlier backing material.
Condition: Vintage condition with expected age-related wear, including surface scratches, small marks, edge wear, minor abrasions, and wear to the backing board. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are part of the condition description.
A striking early photographic portrait with strong Nez Perce subject matter, documented Edward H. Latham authorship, and an unusual historical misattribution to Edward S. Curtis.
