Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Patience Caroline White aged 10 - 1817. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central carnation basket with a meandering floral spray and birds to either side and the following biblical quotation above and a short verse below, the second part of which doesn't seem to make sense!
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youthWhile the evil days come not nor the years draw nighWhen thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them~~~~~~~~~To gain the top of Sion's hill may I with fervour surviveAnd all those powers employ for the wich I from the derive
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree middle with a charming image of two lambs lying beneath its foliage, both with a butterfly hovering above them and a stylised oak tree heavy with acorns beside them with birds and insects around their fruits. Patience Caroline's details and the date of 1817 plus the following verse run across the linen beneath
Christ is a vine his heavenly root supplies the boughs with life and fruitsO let a lasting union join my soul the branch to Christ the vine
The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border which is partially obscured by the frame.
The linen has overall, somewhat dark discolouration with several small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler appears to be sitting on a very dark brown paper or card. The sampler is behindglass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the coloursof the silks wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also bleeding to the majority of the green stitch work. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century burr walnut effect frame which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.
Measures 12 1/4" x 15 1/2" (sight size) and 16" x 19 1/2" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS APPEAR SOMEWHAT DARK OR HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
