Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Smith aged 8 - 1836. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Elizabeth was just eight years old when she completed it. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket with a fruit basket, carnation basket plus bird and flower basket to either side, the latter with a star above. Both fruit baskets have a bird and dog to either side and a squirrel and bird above. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central shaped plaque with a hovering cherub, floral motif and carnation down both sides and containing the following verse
The soul that longs to see God\'s face is sure his love to gainAnd those that early seek his grace shall never seek in vain
There is an exquisitely worked floral framework below the verse surrounding Elizabeth\'s details and the date of 1836 with a fruit bush and stag down both sides, whilst the lower section of the linen is stitched with an impressive three storey house with an expanse of grass and a tree to each side of its steps. The house then has a Tree of Knowledge to its left and right, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. The fruits of the tree have a trio of birds around them and a butterfly above, then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges with grubbiness, presumably from an open fire, to the field from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There are visible slivers of the original edging cloth plus several areas of damage around the edges, some having resulted in stitch loss to the strawberry border. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a backing cloth. The sampler is behindglass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the coloursof the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. Thesampler is contained within a mid 20th century stained pine frame which is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 13 3/4\" x 15 3/4\" (sight size) and 16 3/4\" x 18 3/4\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS APPEAR SOMEWHAT DARK OR HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
