Wonderful antique American stoneware fruit/preserve jar, dating to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.
This heavy utilitarian stoneware jar measures approximately 7–7½” tall with the lid in place and about 5½–6” in diameter. It has a cream/white glazed body and interior, fitted stoneware lid, and an old iron wire bail with a clamping mechanism that holds the lid securely in place.
The underside of the jar is unglazed and shows the natural buff-colored stoneware body and period manufacturing marks. The base is hand marked “747.” The meaning of this number has not been identified, so it is being described simply as a production or identification mark rather than attributed to a particular maker.
What Was It Used For?
Before modern refrigeration became commonplace, stoneware jars were an important part of the American kitchen and pantry. Their dense, durable ceramic bodies were well suited to storing and preserving foods. The Smithsonian notes that stoneware was valued because it could hold liquids and help keep perishable contents cool.
Smaller vessels such as this were commonly called fruit, preserve or canning jars. Depending upon the household and sealing method, stoneware containers were used for foods such as fruit preserves, pickled fruits and vegetables, relishes and other preserved foods. Stoneware storage vessels were also traditionally used for butter, lard and salted foods.
The fitted ceramic lid and iron clamping mechanism on this example were designed to hold the lid firmly against the mouth of the jar. Period fruit-jar closures used mechanical pressure along with a sealing material or gasket to help create a tighter seal. Surviving stoneware fruit jars with ceramic lids and wire-bail closures demonstrate this same transition toward more secure food-preservation containers.
By the turn of the 20th century, glass fruit/Mason jars were increasingly replacing traditional stoneware vessels for home canning and food preservation, making pieces like this survivors from an important transitional period in American kitchen history.
The exact original contents of this particular jar are unknown.
Condition
Very nice antique condition with age-appropriate wear and character. The stoneware shows natural manufacturing irregularities, staining/discoloration and surface wear consistent with its age. The iron bail and closure have oxidation and patina.
The fitted stoneware lid is present, which is a particularly nice feature, as lids and closure hardware are often separated or lost over the decades.
The interior and underside of the lid are shown in the photographs, as is the 747 marking on the base.
Please examine all photographs closely as they are part of the condition description. The piece has not been aggressively cleaned or restored, preserving its aged appearance.
