BUCK’S STATEMENT:
Picture the shelves of an old American general store more than a century ago, lined with colorful tins of coffee, tobacco, canned vegetables and everything a family might need to get through the week. Behind the counter, the shopkeeper knows most of his customers by name, and somewhere among those neatly stacked groceries sits a bright yellow can of Heinz Oven Baked Pork and Beans. Before supermarkets, barcodes and plastic packaging became part of everyday life, even the most ordinary pantry staples were dressed in beautiful printed labels. This old Heinz can takes us back to that world, with its familiar green pickle logo, bold red lettering and the promise of Boston-style pork and beans prepared without tomato sauce. It’s the sort of everyday object that was never meant to survive, which makes finding one today all the more enjoyable.
This original vintage Heinz Oven Baked Pork and Beans can features a wonderful yellow paper label with colorful advertising graphics, the famous Heinz pickle trademark, and early food packaging language, including a reference to the Food and Drugs Act of June 30, 1906. The label identifies the product as Boston Style, prepared without tomato sauce, and lists a net weight of 33 ounces. The reverse features the Heinz 57 Varieties emblem, serving instructions and the company’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania identification. The empty can shows considerable age and wear, including rust and oxidation to the metal, heavy deterioration around the top opening, staining, discoloration, soiling and wear to the original paper label. The can is being offered strictly as an antique advertising collectible, not for food use. A wonderful survivor for collectors of early American grocery advertising, Heinz memorabilia, antique food tins or old general store merchandise.
