Up for sale is an authentic, original 19th-century American daguerreotype (image on a silver-coated copper plate). This striking 1/6 plate portrait features a young gentleman smartly dressed in a formal jacket, dark vest, white collar with a bow tie, and a distinct period hat. He is posed against a decorative patterned studio backdrop.
The photograph exhibits a beautiful mirror-like reflection when tilted in the light. It is housed in a classic textured oval brass mat and rests inside its original leather-covered wooden case.
Condition Details:
• The Image Plate: A genuine silver-plate sixth-plate daguerreotype with sharp focus and clarity on the subject. Minor typical surface dust, light spotting, and edge tarnish patina under the glass. The image packet is completely original and untouched.
• The Case Spine (Poor Condition): Please note that the leather-covered wooden spine is in poor condition. The thin outer leather covering over the hinge has completely worn away, fully exposing the raw, yellowish wooden frame rails underneath. While it is currently holding together structurally as one unit, it is fragile and requires very gentle handling.
• The Case Cover & Velvet: The front and back covers feature a beautiful, deeply blind-stamped 8-pointed geometric starburst and floral vine motif. The front includes its original, fully functional brass wire hook clasp that keeps the case securely shut. The inside lid features a wonderfully preserved, deep crimson silk-velvet pad with a crisp, deeply hot-stamped floral motif showing virtually no fading. Honest rubbing and corner wear to the leather as pictured.
