Vintage 1965 Japanese Izumiya Geta Wooden Sandals / Clogs – Asakusa Tokyo – Tiger Design – Signed & Dated – Showa Period
Exceptional vintage pair of traditional Japanese geta wooden sandals / clogs, dating to 1965 and associated with the historic Izumiya / 和泉屋 traditional footwear shop of Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan.
This pair is especially striking for its bold tiger decoration, which extends across the two geta when displayed side by side. The tiger is rendered in dark raised/glossy linework against the warm natural wood, creating a highly decorative Japanese folk-art appearance.
The geta retain their traditional raised wooden platform construction with natural-fiber wrapped hanao thong straps.
Most importantly, these are not anonymous vintage geta.
Both wooden sandals retain their original Izumiya / 和泉屋 paper labels on the underside. The labels identify the historic Asakusa footwear retailer and display a distinctive geometric Izumiya shop mark/trademark.
That same geometric mark is also impressed directly into the wooden edges of both geta, providing an important physical connection between the footwear and the original Izumiya labels.
The underside additionally bears a handwritten signature/inscription and the date 6.19.1965, establishing an exact period date of June 19, 1965, during Japan’s Showa era.
Izumiya was a long-established traditional Japanese footwear business in Asakusa specializing in geta, zori and related footwear. These surviving retailer labels, matching impressed shop marks, dated inscription and distinctive tiger decoration make this pair considerably more interesting than ordinary unmarked vintage geta.
