1930s Stinson Reliant SR-5A Floatplane
NC14594 Vintage Seaplane Photo 8x10
Reliant Ready for the Water | 1979 MDC St. Louis PrintDESCRIPTIONThis 8x10 photograph shows a Stinson Reliant floatplane tied up at a dock, with the registration NC-14594 painted on the fin above a small emblem.A figure is visible at the cabin window, two long white pinstripes run the length of the fuselage, and the radial engine sits in a ring cowling with curved white trim paint. The twin floats fill the lower part of the frame, with a pier, a small white building with a flagpole and a person standing among the pilings behind. Included in the scan set are a close view of the nose, propeller and float struts and a view of the tail and fin.The registration NC14594 is listed in aviation photo archives as a Stinson SR-5A Reliant, construction number 9346-A. The Reliant was introduced in 1933, and Stinson delivered 1,327 of them by 1941. The SR-5A belongs to the early straight-wing group, before the gull-wing SR-7 arrived, and was powered by a Lycoming R-680 radial. Reliants were flown on wheels, floats and skis by sportsmen, business owners, bush pilots and companies, which makes a seaplane view like this one typical of the type. This print is a 1979 company reprint made by McDonnell Douglas (MDC) at St. Louis, not an original 1930s print, and it is offered and priced as such. The back is stamped in blue MDC ST. LOUIS, DEC 12 1979, NEGATIVES NOT FILED, and carries two impressions of an ink stamp for Donald and Barbara Aitken of Irvine, California. It comes from the Aitken Collection. Scanned at 600dpi.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. The registration NC-14594, the cowling, the float struts and the pier are readable in the scans, with moderate grain and some softness in the background, typical of a reprint from an older negative. A few small dark specks are visible in the sky area. No tears, creases or stains are visible in the scans. The back carries the blue MDC St. Louis stamp and two Aitken ink stamps, as shown. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description.
