Up for sale is a scarce, authentic piece of 19th-century regional religious and Civil War veteran crossover ephemera. This printed notice card was issued for a Sunday evening service on November 27, 1887, at the historic Old South Church congregation in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The card announces a sermon titled \"An Handful of Corn,\" held at the local Y.M.C.A. Hall on Elm Street. It features striking late-Victorian typographic choices, including a distinctive shaded display font for the sermon title.
Historical Significance & Leadership:The service was led by Pastor J. F. Lovering (Joseph F. Lovering), a major figure in New England civic life and Civil War veteran history. Beyond his ministry at Worcester\'s Old South Church, Comrade Lovering served as the national Chaplain-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) from 1880 to 1881. During his national tenure, he famously introduced the resolution that led to the official organization of the Woman\'s State Relief Corps auxiliary.
The reverse side of the card contains original, period handwritten pencil notes from a church attendee reading \"The Christians communion\" and referencing \"Mark 16. 15,\" adding fantastic historical provenance to the piece.
