*ORIGINAL* 1943 WWII SEXTANT EUREKA Cairo Tehran SECRET CCS Conference Papers:
$350.00

ORIGINAL 1943 WARTIME EDITION — NOT A MODERN REPRINT

THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY.

Offered here is an original 1943 classified World War II volume containing the papers and minutes of meetings of the SEXTANT and EUREKA Conferences, held in November–December 1943.

Handwritten name on inside front cover indicates volume *potentially* belonged to Commander Richard Duke Coleridge of the British Royal Navy, who served in the Secretariat for the Combined Chiefs of Staff alongside American officers like Colonel McFarland and Captain Royal.

This particular volume is imprinted "Copy No. 27" on the inside back cover.

This volume was edited and published in 1943 by the Office of the U.S. Secretary, Office of the Combined Chiefs of Staff, and was originally classified:

U.S. SECRET / BRITISH MOST SECRET

It is accompanied by JCS Regrading Memo 52-73, dated October 3, 1973, documenting that the volume was subsequently downgraded to UNCLASSIFIED approximately thirty years after its wartime publication.

This is an original 1943 government-produced wartime volume—not a facsimile, reproduction, print-on-demand edition, or the modern 2011 Military Studies Press reprint of the SEXTANT-EUREKA papers.

The SEXTANT and EUREKA Conferences

The SEXTANT Conference was the code name associated with the Allied meetings held in Cairo in November and December 1943. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met with Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek during the first Cairo meetings, while the American and British Combined Chiefs of Staff conducted extensive discussions concerning Allied military strategy.

Among the subjects under consideration were the planned invasion of Western Europe, operations in the Mediterranean, the war against Japan, operations in China and Southeast Asia, allocation of military resources, and the overall direction of the Allied war effort.

Between the Cairo sessions came EUREKA—the Tehran Conference of November 28–December 1, 1943—where Roosevelt and Churchill met Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. This was the first wartime meeting of the “Big Three” leaders.

Tehran proved to be one of the pivotal Allied conferences of World War II. Among the most important matters discussed was Operation OVERLORD, the planned cross-Channel invasion of France in 1944, together with the coordination of Soviet and Anglo-American military operations against Nazi Germany.

Following Tehran, the American and British delegations returned to Cairo, where the Combined Chiefs continued their deliberations and considered the military decisions reached during EUREKA.

About This Volume

This book preserves the actual papers and meeting records prepared and compiled for the Combined Chiefs of Staff in 1943, while World War II was still being fought.

Bound in dark red leather, it was one of a series of official Combined Chiefs of Staff conference volumes produced during the war. Related volumes documented such major Allied conferences as Casablanca, TRIDENT, QUADRANT, ARGONAUT, TERMINAL and OCTAGON, with classifications ranging from U.S. Secret / British Most Secret to Top Secret.

The accompanying 1973 JCS memorandum is an especially interesting part of the volume's history, documenting its transition from a highly classified wartime record to an unclassified historical document.

Again, this is an original 1943 classified wartime publication. It should not be confused with later commercially published editions containing reproductions of the same historical documents.

Condition

Original WWII-era volume with age and storage wear consistent with its age and institutional use. Light foxing and shelf wear may be present, and the spine/binding may show age-related fading or wear.

JCS Regrading Memo 52-73, dated October 3, 1973, is included.

Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition, contents, markings and binding. Photographs form an important part of the description.

A remarkable original documentary record of Allied strategic planning at a critical moment in World War II, connecting the Combined Chiefs of Staff, Cairo Conference, Tehran Conference, Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, Chiang Kai-shek and the planning for Operation OVERLORD.
