Briny Breezes began in 1919 when Ward Beecher Miller bought 43 acres of barrier island land near Boynton Beach and named it Shore Acres, raising turkeys and dairy cattle before the Depression changed his plans. Short on income, he began renting space to traveling tourists with trailers at $3 a week, and by 1937 the makeshift camp had grown to 40 trailers, enough to split off as its own community distinct from Boynton Beach.
This beach view shows the community\'s oceanfront recreation area packed with vacationers, canvas windbreak screens staked into the sand to block the wind, a thatched-roof palapa shelter at the water\'s edge, and sunbathers scattered across towels and blankets while swimmers wade into the surf beyond the breakers.
What began as an informal trailer camp eventually became permanent. In 1958 the residents pooled their money to buy out Miller\'s land outright, and in 1963 Briny Breezes incorporated as its own town, one of only two mobile home communities in Florida to hold that status.
