Massachusetts required prompt reporting of specified communicable diseases to local boards of health under Chapter 480 of the Acts of 1907, part of a broader early-twentieth-century push to track and contain outbreaks of diphtheria, typhoid, smallpox, and other infectious illness before antibiotics or widespread vaccination existed. This card gave New Bedford households or physicians a ready-made form for filing that report.
The printed list runs eighteen diseases deep, from actinomycosis and Asiatic cholera down to whooping cough and yellow fever, reflecting the public health priorities of the period. This particular card was never filled in.
New Bedford's Board of Health still operates today, and Massachusetts still requires exactly this kind of prompt disease reporting, now run through its Department of Public Health under updated regulations that trace their lineage directly back to laws like the 1907 act named on this card.
