Original early-20th-century mounted photograph of the White House East Entrance in Washington, D.C., dating to approximately 1905–1906 during the Theodore Roosevelt administration.
The photograph shows the newly constructed East Entrance and East Terrace, completed as part of Theodore Roosevelt’s major 1902 renovation of the White House. A circular fountain is visible directly in front of the entrance, while two horse-drawn carriages cross East Executive Avenue in the foreground.
The view is particularly interesting because it captures the East Entrance only a few years after its construction. Architectural details, landscaping and clipped vegetation closely correspond with documented White House East Entrance photographs from approximately 1906. This photograph appears to have been taken from a position slightly to one side of the better-known documented views.
Based on the newly established East Entrance, the landscaping and the horse-drawn traffic, the photograph is conservatively dated c.1905–1906.
The gray mount is hand-captioned “White House” beneath the photograph. No photographer, publisher or commercial studio imprint is present. Research located several institutional photographs from nearly the same viewpoint, but no identical image with these two carriages was found, suggesting this may have been a privately produced or amateur period photograph rather than a standard commercial tourist view.
The photograph offers a striking glimpse of the White House during the Theodore Roosevelt era, with the newly redesigned entrance, fountain, landscaping and horse-drawn transportation all visible in one scene.
Mount measures approximately 4½ x 5¾ inches; please refer to the measurement photographs for exact dimensions.
Condition: Age toning, spotting and handling wear are present. The mount has noticeable edge wear and loss along the right side/lower-right corner. Photograph itself remains well attached and visually strong. Reverse is largely blank.
