WOLVERINE #1, November 1988, Marvel Comics. NEWSSTAND EDITION. The first issue of Wolverine’s ongoing monthly series, written by CHRIS CLAREMONT with pencils by JOHN BUSCEMA and inks by AL WILLIAMSON.
The cover says it: “At last: in his own monthly series!” The story is “Sword Quest”, set on the island of Telambang, and it opens the run that continued for nearly two decades.
A precise note on the key: this is the first issue of Wolverine’s ongoing series. It is not his first appearance (Incredible Hulk #180-181, 1974) and not his first solo comic (the 1982 limited series). I’d rather you hear that from me before you buy.
This is the newsstand edition. You can see the barcode in the lower left of the cover in shots 01 and 07.
AUTHENTICITY
Verified against the indicia, photographed in shot 09. It reads:
“WOLVERINE™ 1, November, 1988. Published by MARVEL COMICS, A NEW WORLD COMPANY. James E. Galton, President. Stan Lee, Publisher… OFFICE OF PUBLICATION: 387 PARK AVENUE SOUTH, NEW YORK, N.Y. 10016. Published monthly. Copyright © 1988 Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc… Price $1.50 per copy in the U.S. and $2.00 in Canada… PRINTED IN CANADA.”
Original 1988 printing, not a reprint or facsimile.
CONDITION: VF/NM 9.0. The flaws, first:
- Under side lighting (shot 02), a few very faint vertical lines show in the black area to the left of Wolverine’s claws. They don’t show at all under normal light (shot 01). I’m pointing them out so you can judge them yourself.
- Pages are cream to off-white, which is normal for 1988 newsprint.
- There’s no dedicated straight-on spine shot. Shot 04 runs along the spine from a low angle four corners are sharp. Each is photographed close in shots 05 to 08.
- The spine is tight and flat with no stress lines or colour breaks along the black spine edge.
- Cover gloss is strong. In shot 02 the sparkle in the black areas is gloss catching the light, not wear.
- No creases. Shot 02 is lit from the side specifically to find them.
- The book lies flat. No roll or warp (shot 04).
- Staples are clean and seated, and the centerfold is attached. Shot 11.
- Complete. No tape, tears, writing, stamps or water damage.
A sharp, glossy, flat newsstand copy. What you see is what ships.
