This rare, unique, antique photo/letter collection was owned by William Avery Rockefeller. The photos are of the First Yale Unit, which was originally a student airplane flying club founded by Yale University sophomore F. Trubee Davison in June 1916. The First Yale Unit were trained as pilots in the summer of 1916 and were subsequently used as the first US aerial costal patrol unit. The First Yale Unit is considered to be the first US Naval Air reserve unit.
F Trubee Davison would later become assistant United States Secretary of War, director of personnel for the CIA, and president of the American Museum of Natural History.
The letter is a personal letter hand written and signed by William Avery Rockefeller to F Trubee Davison in 1919.
William Avery Rockefeller, known as Bill, was a descendant of William Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil Company.
