Warren Commission Exhibit 312 Lee Harvey Oswald.

Warren Commission Exhibit 312is an envelope with stamps, addressed by Lee Harvey Oswald to his brotherRobert Oswald in 1961. At the time Lee Harvey Oswald was living in Minsk, USSR(now part of Belarus). Oswald signed his last name twice on the envelope, oncein English in writing his brother’s name, and once in Russian in writing hisown name and return address.

Oswald served as a radarspecialist in the Marines in Japan. The base at which he was stationed waswhere U2 spy flights took off and landed on missions over the Soviet Union.Soon after leaving the Marines, he defected to the Soviet Union in 1959. In Mayof 1960 an American U2 spy plane flown by Frances Gary Powers was shot downover the Soviet Union, causing a major crisis between the two countries.

Exhibit 312 was part of theWarren Commission’s investigation to determine if: 1) Oswald had passed onmilitary secrets to the Soviet Union that may have played a part in the downingof the U2 plane; 2) if there was any evidence of contacts between Oswald andSoviet intelligence agents while he was in the Marines or while he lived in theUSSR; and 3) if Oswald was an intelligence agent for the Soviet Union or Cuba.Oswald returned to the United States in 1962, a little over a year beforePresident Kennedy was assassinated.

A photo of Warren CommissionExhibit 312 can be found in The Warren Commission Report, Volume XVI, page 861. A copy ofthat page is shown. Exhibit 312 is in excellent condition and is housed in a professional grade case to protect it from environmental deterioration. The original stamps are still on the envelope and would make for aone-of-a-kind addition to any stamp collection. Whether Oswald’s DNA isembedded in saliva on the back of the stamps is a matter of speculation.
