WWII Named Bible –Howard Dewey Grable
►Original WWII pocket Bible belonging to Pfc. Howard Dewey Grable, a U.S. Marine rifleman serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, who was KIA on Saipan on June 15, 1944, at just 20 years of age.
►Howard was born January 29, 1924, in Conneaut, Ohio. He attended Conneaut High School, where he played football and participated in track, graduating in 1942. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on October 4, 1943, and following his training, joined the 8th Marines in the Pacific in February 1944. His April 1944 Marine Corps muster roll confirms his assignment to Company B and identifies him as a rifleman (MOS 745).
►The blue pocket Bible has a particularly personal connection to Howard's life. During his Marine Corps training, he sent it to Kathleen Beisty, a fellow Conneaut High School student. Its handwritten inscription provides a personal link to Howard and Kathleen during the months before his death.
►On June 15, 1944, the 2nd Marine Division landed on Saipan in the Mariana Islands. Howard's battalion was committed to the fighting, and he was KIA that same day. He was initially buried in the 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan before his remains were returned to Conneaut, Ohio, following the war.
