Authentic WWII U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wrist Compass
Up for sale/sale is an original, authentic World War II liquid-type wrist compass issued to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This historic piece of field gear was manufactured by the Superior Magneto Corporation out of Long Island City, New York, during the mid-WWII era (circa 1943–1945).
Historical Background:
Designed specifically for rugged field operations, engineering tasks, and airborne troops, these wrist compasses were a vital piece of navigation gear. To conserve strategic metals like brass for the war effort—and to prevent magnetic interference with the compass needle—the military constructed these housings using a durable, olive-drab molded plastic/Bakelite. The crystal is made of durable wartime Plexiglass to prevent shattering in combat. The underside features the crisp, stamped military contract markings.
Condition Details:
• Casing: The plastic housing is intact and structurally sound, showing a great natural patina, minor edge wear, and historical scuffs consistent with military age and field use.
• Markings: The manufacturer lettering on the bottom is entirely legible. The top bezel dial and direction markings remain clear.
• Fluid & Strap: Please note that the original damping fluid has dried up over the decades, and the original leather/canvas strap is missing. The needle still moves freely.
