DescriptionThis is an original 1938 Imperial Japanese Navy publication titled Hokoku offeran, Volume 8, issued during the early years of the Second Sino-Japanese War.It was published by the Military Affairs Publicity Department of the Japanese Navy Ministry. The cover also bears a presentation stamp reading:“Presented”
“Sapporo Regional Naval Personnel Office”This makes the copy especially interesting, as it was not simply an ordinary commercial book. It was an official wartime publication distributed through a regional Imperial Japanese Navy personnel office. The book was produced to present stories of courage, sacrifice, and patriotic service connected with the war in China. Its contents include accounts of Imperial Japanese Navy personnel, battlefield episodes, portraits of individual sailors and soldiers, and stories relating to naval landing force operations in the Shanghai area.Among the contents are articles concerning the fighting of Japanese naval landing forces in Shanghai.Rather than being a simple operational history, the publication presents individual servicemen as examples of bravery and patriotic duty. From a modern historical perspective, this also makes the book an important example of wartime propaganda and military public relations. It shows how the Imperial Japanese Navy presented the war to the Japanese public in 1938, which stories it chose to emphasize, and how individual servicemen were transformed into examples of national sacrifice and heroism. The combination of:Imperial Japanese Navy
