Description:
Up for sale is a beautiful and scarce World War I Commemorative Service Medal issued by Union College in New York to honor its students and alumni who served during the Great War.
Obverse (Front): Features a detailed profile of a helmeted Minerva (the traditional symbol of Union College) surrounded by the school's historic French motto: "Sous les lois de Minerve nous devenons tous frères" (Under the laws of Minerva, we all become brothers). Stamped "ST. OF N. YORK" and "UNION COLLEGE".
Reverse (Back): Stamped with the Latin inscription "ARMIS PATRIAE VINDEX" (Defender of the fatherland by force of arms) and the Roman numerals MCMXVII and MCMXVIII (1917-1918).
Condition:
The medal features a fantastic, deep, authentic aged patina with clear, crisp text and details. It comes attached to its original, vintage deep-garnet silk ribbon. The ribbon shows some expected fraying and age wear near the top mounting loop, but remains intact and securely attached to the medal piece.
