Original World War I U.S. military grouping centered on Sgt. 1CL Fred F. Bailey, service number 1182865, of the 4th Air Park. The grouping includes Bailey's matching pair of named military identification tags with cord along with four period photographs that were acquired with the tags and are believed to depict the same serviceman. An especially appealing intact grouping for collectors of WWI U.S. Air Service, AEF, aviation and named military material.
Named Dog Tags: Both round identification tags are stamped “FRED F. BAILEY / SGT 1CL / 1182865 / 4 AIR PARK,” with “USA” stamped on the reverse.
WWI Air Service Connection: The 4th Air Park was associated with the 1st Pursuit Group of the U.S. First Army Air Service during the closing period of World War I, giving this named grouping particularly interesting early American military aviation context.
Four Period Photographs: Includes multiple images of a U.S. serviceman in WWI-era uniform, including full-length military portraits/views and a real-photo postcard. These photographs accompanied Bailey's dog tags and are believed to show the same soldier, although the photographic identification has not been independently documented.
Original Grouping: Offered together as acquired rather than separating the named identification tags from the accompanying photographs, preserving the historical association between the pieces.
The tags show expected surface wear, scratches, oxidation/soiling and age to the cord. Photographs exhibit varying degrees of age toning, surface wear, edge wear and other normal evidence of age and handling. One photograph is in postcard format with period handwriting/addressing on the reverse. No claim is made that every photograph has been conclusively identified as Bailey; they are being offered as the photographs found with his named tags.
