Before modern electronic communication became universal, semaphore was an important visual communication method for ships and naval units.Both pieces contain handwritten notes and signs of actual use, making them more than simply preserved reference books.Especially interesting is the handwritten marking on the back of the recruit training book:“Kure / Shimizu / 6827”“Shimizu” appears to be the name of the original owner or user. The number 6827 may have been an identification or administrative number, although its exact meaning cannot be confirmed.This personal marking gives the set an additional historical dimension. Rather than an anonymous naval manual, it preserves the trace of a specific individual who appears to have used these materials during training.More than 100 years old, the books show age-related staining, toning, wear, folds, handwritten notes, and other signs of use.
