Purchased from a Denver, Colorado estate.
With rationing of metal in WW2, the US government issued critical requests to inventors to create non-metal containers to transport food, oil, munitions and supplies overseas. This mid century wooden container with interlocking staves, complex tongue and groove alignment and heavy outer wood ribbing to distribute internal pressure, was a proof of concept/prototype, presented to the US Government. It is a one of a kind.
This inventor used pre-seasoned highly resilient wood crate ends from California Fruit Growers Exchange. This was presented to the US government as an idea for transporting goods. Unclear if they embraced the idea and began producing products with this design. Needs more diligence with the USPTO (US Patent Office).
A wonderful, unique industrial primitive or something a military history buff would love to have in their collection.
