President Woodrow Wilson Signed Harris & Ewing Studio Portrait
Elite Political Americana with Ironclad Provenance: Ex-David and Janice Frent Collection
A magnificent, museum-quality piece of 20th-century presidential history: an original, authentic studio portrait boldly signed by Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. This silver gelatine profile, captured by the legendary Harris & Ewing studio of Washington, D.C.—the official photographers of the early 20th-century White House—exhibits exceptional historical gravity, detail, and contrast.
CONSERVATION & HOUSING NOTE: As shown in the detailed listing photographs, the portrait currently resides inside a protective, border-taped display sleeve/carrier. Heritage sales originally removed the portrait from this sleeve to inspect, grade, and image the photo freely for their sale catalog. The photograph itself is fully intact and complete as a standalone piece—it is not permanently adhered to or held together by this housing, and the next owner can safely remove it if desired. However, to preserve the exact state in which it was received following the Frent sale, I have chosen not to remove it from this sleeve. The buyer will receive both the signed portrait and the protective housing exactly as pictured.
Key Highlights:
sale History: Publicly cataloged, vetted, and sold by Heritage sales (Dallas, Texas) during The David and Janice Frent Collection, Part V (sale #6199, Lot #43335, June 22–23, 2019).
This vintage portrait displays beautifully with rich tones and a sharp profile of the President. Please review the high-resolution images carefully, noting the following observations consistent with original sale listings:
The Autograph: Woodrow Wilson's signature on the wide bottom border is highly legible, dark, and clear. There is a single, minute, microscopic abrasion that just barely touches the "W" in "Wilson" but does not affect the signature’s overall integrity.
Surface & Margins: The portrait exhibits a minor crease in the upper-right corner margin. Faint silvering and staining are visible near the extreme top border edge, including a thin line of historical glue residue from past frame matting. Slight, natural paper rippling is present at the top margin.
This is a significant historical artifact, and it will be handled with the utmost care. It will be shipped flat, secured between multiple rigid layers of archival board, and thoroughly padded to prevent any movement or corner damage. Full insurance to the final sale value is included in the shipping cost. Due to the high value, this item will require signature confirmation upon delivery.
