The Westfield Horse Show was a prominent local equestrian tradition held annually during the early-to-mid 20th century in Westfield, New Jersey.
Key Historical Milestones
• Early Beginnings & Venues: Events like the annual Westfield Horse Show date back to at least the 1920s and 1930s, featuring multiple competitive classes and stakes (such as $250 stakes).
• The Armory & Polo Fields: Competitions frequently utilized local venues, including the Westfield Armory (which hosted indoor ring events and box seat expansions) and local polo fields for matinee performances. Weather conditions often dictated whether events moved between outdoor courses and indoor accommodations.
• Equestrian Variety: The schedule showcased diverse divisions ranging from military events for officers' jumpers to draft horse competitions (such as the notable Cathedral Cup).
• Broader Union County Roots: Westfield's rich equestrian heritage is also closely tied to the broader history of local riding institutions in the area, such as the century-old Watchung Stables in nearby Union County, where generations of local riders first trained.
