Beautiful vintage Waimiri-Atroari “Wyiepe” harvest basket from the Brazilian Amazon. Hand-woven of forest fibers with bold black-and-tan geometric designs, a rigid oval rim, and the original carrying straps.
About the people & the basket
The Waimiri-Atroari are an Indigenous Carib-speaking people who live in the rainforest of northern Amazonas/Roraima, Brazil. Basketry is an essential technology and a core art form—used daily for carrying manioc, fruits, firewood, and market goods, and for storing household items. Wyiepe baskets combine strong structural ribs with finely patterned plaiting; dark elements are traditionally dyed with natural plant dyes. Patterns often signal family traditions and community identity, so each basket is both tool and artwork.
