Original vintage Joe Chastek’s Vagabond’s House advertising matchbook from 2505 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California.
Fantastic early Southern California tropical / pre-tiki graphics featuring large red hibiscus flowers on the exterior and an elaborate interior scene created across the actual matchsticks. When opened, the matches form a colorful topless hula girl / Polynesian pinup against a palm-tree tropical background.
Vagabond’s House was operated by restaurateur Joe Chastek and opened at this Wilshire Boulevard location in 1946. Chastek was an important figure in Southern California’s early tropical restaurant scene, and Vagabond’s House became a popular Hollywood-era gathering place known for exotic décor, food and celebrity clientele. Period sources specifically place Chastek and Vagabond’s House at 2505 Wilshire Blvd. These are unused or unstruck.
