This hat is a soft wool cap with a flat top and a small pom-pomn the center called a “toorie”. The hatgets its name from “Tom O’Shanter”, the hero of a famous 1790 poem by Scottish writerRobert Burns.
Scottish military regiments started wearing a khaki versionof the cap during World War I because it worked well in muddy trenches. Soldiers wore the cap with a regimental badgeover the left eye and a colored feather called a hackle.
