This vintage, feature matchbook advertises advertises Putnam & Thurston’s which was a restaurant in Worcester, Massachusetts. Also know as “Put’s” or “P&T”, the restaurant was established in 1858 by Edward J. Putnam and Frank E. Thurston in 1858 and served as a popular local hot spot and nightclub until it closed in 1978. By the 1920’s to 1930’s, the restaurant expanded into a massive complex that was a power-lunch spot for the city's business, media, and political elites. It also had several themed rooms for private functions of up to 100 people and a ladies cocktail lounge. The cover of this matchbook advertises the restaurant and the back includes graphics of the restaurant’s front entrance. Inside there are matches that have graphics of the restaurant’s lunch area printed on the matches, as well as the names of the individually named, themed rooms. Based on the telephone format on the inside of this matchbook, it was manufactured in the 1940’s or earlier. An excellent addition to any matchbook collection and a great piece of Worcester, MA memorabilia!
