The rectangular wall plaque measures approximately 12" wide x 6.5" high and has an attached metal hanger on the reverse. The image depicts a charging bull surrounded by three figures, including the central acrobat shown vaulting over the bull. Blue, ochre, pink, black and cream coloring is surrounded by a decorative Minoan-style border.
The original Bull-Leaping or Toreador Fresco is one of the best-known works associated with the Palace of Knossos. Bull-leaping imagery appears repeatedly in Minoan art and is generally interpreted as depicting a ceremonial or athletic activity involving acrobatic movement around a charging bull. Modern reproductions continue to be handmade in Greece using plaster applied to a supporting panel, deliberately recreating the fragmented and weathered appearance of an excavated fresco.
Condition: Good vintage condition with extensive crackling, mottling, surface distressing and simulated age across the image. Much of this is intentional to reproduce the appearance of an ancient excavated fresco. There is additional genuine age/use wear including small edge and corner chips, scratches, abrasions and surface/finish loss. The reverse shows staining, scuffs and general wear.
