Potters in Japan made decorative ceramic animal figurines for export markets during the mid-twentieth century, often supplying specialty import stores in the United States. These decorative pieces were produced to satisfy a growing post-war demand for novelty home accessories and interior decor featuring exotic animal motifs. Skilled artisans shaped the figures by hand or in molds, carefully painting the striped patterns and applying detailed crackle glazes before firing them at high temperatures.
People placed these decorative animal figures on shelves, desks, and tables throughout living spaces as stylish accents to brighten plain rooms. They were frequently used as decorative bookends to hold upright collections of books on library shelves or mantelpieces. Over time, changing interior design tastes shifted away from animal ornaments, bringing the commercial production of these hand-decorated ceramic novelties to a close.
