A Meteorological Office copper and brass rain gauge manufactured by Rollason of London. Based, it seems on the \'Snowdon\' model as per the Science Museum website.
Rollason was one of three firms who made such gauges for the Met Office. As a Mark II model, I believe the date of manufacture is between 1920 and 1960.
The gauge consists of four parts. The top has a 5 inch diameter internal aperture (which was standard) reinforced by a ring of brass. I presume this was to maintain its structure and hence, the accuracy of the gauge. The rain passed via the internal funnel into a collecting copper bucket contained within the bottom two sections. I assume that the water collected was manually decanted into a measuring cylinder at prescribed intervals.
In very good condition but with evidence of age and use. There are one or two minor dings and a small accumulation of Verdigris and scale in places.
Approximate dimensions:
Overall Height: 48cm (19 ins) Base diameter: 21.5cm (8 1/2 ins)
Top diameter (External) 14cm (5 1/2 inches)
Will be posted dismantled to ensure safe delivery.
