Vintage Kato Kogei Japan Porcelain Flower Seller Figurine Pair – Approx. 15\" Tall
This is a beautiful matching pair of large vintage Kato Kogei porcelain figurines from Japan, depicting a young woman and gentleman in elaborate European period dress. At approximately 15\" tall, these are substantial display pieces with considerably more presence than the small porcelain figurines commonly found from this maker.
The woman is modeled as a flower seller wearing a wide pink hat, fitted rose-colored jacket and full cream and pale yellow skirt. She holds the gathered front of her apron filled with individually modeled pastel flowers.
Her companion wears a gray-blue hat and long blue coat over an ivory waistcoat, ruffled cravat, rose-colored breeches and tall stockings. He carries a woven basket filled with dimensional porcelain flowers. Both figures stand against modeled tree trunks with grass, flowers and naturalistic details surrounding their feet.
The figures have a wonderful Georgian/Rococo Revival appearance, with the elaborate costumes and pastoral flower-selling theme recalling decorative European porcelain figures of the 18th and 19th centuries. The soft muted palette of blue, rose, cream, yellow and green gives the pair an especially attractive vintage appearance.
Both pieces are Kato Kogei Japanese porcelain.
The underside carries the molded Kato Kogei mark along with the model designation JB/1166M. I have not found a documented title for this particular design, so I am retaining the model number rather than assigning the pair an unsupported series name.
Each figure measures approximately 15\" tall. The bases are approximately 5\" across, based on my measurements.
The pair remains very attractive with the delicate flowers, fingers, costume details and naturalistic bases creating a great deal of visual interest. These are especially impressive displayed together, as the figures clearly complement one another in subject, scale, coloring and design.
They are in very nice vintage display condition with light age and handling wear. There may be minor surface marks or small manufacturing irregularities associated with vintage porcelain. The numerous dimensional flowers and other delicate details remain remarkably attractive.
This is a particularly nice Kato Kogei set for a collection of Japanese porcelain, vintage figurines, Victorian or Rococo Revival decor, romantic cottage interiors, traditional European-style decor or a porcelain figure collection. Their unusually large scale and matching flower-seller theme make the pair much more striking than a single small figurine.
