Up for sale is a vintage J.H. Williams & Co. No. 461 fixed-pin hook spanner wrench, drop-forged in the U.S.A.
The face is clearly stamped 461, J.H. Williams & Co., U.S.A. The reverse carries the small forged B die code Williams used on these tools. The pin is forged as one piece with the hook and is still straight and intact.
Williams catalog specs for the 461:
• Span (circle) diameter: 3-1/4 in
• Pin diameter: 21/64 in
• Pin length: 5/16 in
• Overall length: about 8-1/2 in
The pin seats in a hole or slot in a locknut, packing-gland nut, bearing collar, or adjusting ring, while the hook bears on the outside of the collar. Typical use is machine-tool shafts, gear collars, and material-handling equipment.
J.H. Williams & Co. was a Brooklyn and Buffalo drop-forge maker founded in 1882, later part of Snap-on. This shank stamp, company name plus plain U.S.A., is the mid-century style.
Condition is used, with an even dark forged finish, light handling wear, and no cracks or bends. Stamp is sharp. Please see the photos.
